Description

The Lavender plant is a woody evergreen shrub, up to 1 meter tall, with pale green, narrow linear leaves and violet blue flowers. The entire plant is covered with oil glands, which are in the star shaped hairs that cover the plant. Lavender has been used since ancient times, and the Romans added lavender to their bath water, hence the name from the Latin lavare, ‘to wash’. Differences in soil, altitude and temperature, precipitation and seasons contribute to subtle changes in the scent from one lot of Lavender to another.

Lavender oil is probably the best known of all the essential oils. It seems no medicine kit is complete without a bottle of Lavender. This is most likely due to the number of conditions that Lavender can assist, along with being an oil that is safe to use on children, adults and the elderly alike.

Lavender oil Population, also known as Lavender Fine or true Lavender, is grown in the Provence region and at mid – high altitude in the French Alps. The term “Population” refers to the fact that this is a non-selected, non-varietal plant grown from seed and is not a clone from cuttings. The aim is that complete population of the species is represented in the one field. This means that the oil represents the true plant, each variation is included, and all of the various trace components are present. The yield of oil is low by this method but the quality the highest.

The French would say their oil is the best. Given the tradition and the price, this is probably true. The best French oils are reputed to come from population or seed grown plants. This is because the wide genetic variety provides the oil with minute trace components that give the oil a complete bouquet. Lavender French Population is considered the best Lavender oil for aromatherapy.
